Over a 35-year career, di Giovanni has covered major conflicts including the Siege of Sarajevo, Rwandan genocide, Kosovo War, conflicts in Chechnya, Afghanistan, Iraq War, Somalia, South Sudan, Sierra Leone, Ivory Coast, Zimbabwe, Libya, Yemen, Lebanon, Israel/Palestine, Ukraine and the Syrian civil war. She is a "human rights reporter" with a focus on war crimes and crimes against humanity. In 2016, she was awarded the prestigious Courage Award from the International Women's Media Foundation for her lifetime body of work.
