No record of baptism has been found. The year 1659 is based on Purcell's memorial tablet in Westminster Abbey and the frontispiece of his ''Sonnata's of III. Parts'' (London, 1683). He composed more than 100 songs, a tragic opera ''Dido and Aeneas'', and wrote incidental music to a version of Shakespeare's ''A Midsummer Night's Dream'' called ''The Fairy Queen''.Purcell's musical style was uniquely English, although it incorporated Italian and French elements. Purcell is generally considered to be one of the greatest English composers; no later native-born English composer approached his fame until Edward Elgar, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst, William Walton and Benjamin Britten in the 20th century.
