Julian Savulescu

Savulescu in 2015 Julian Savulescu (born 22 December 1963) is an Australian philosopher and bioethicist. He is the Chen Su Lan Centennial Professor in Medical Ethics at the National University of Singapore and the Uehiro Chair in Practical Ethics at the University of Oxford. A specialist in applied ethics, he is known for his work on the ethics of human enhancement, particularly his principle of procreative beneficence and his advocacy for moral bioenhancement.

Savulescu founded the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics in 2003, which became the Uehiro Oxford Institute in 2024 following an endowment from the Uehiro Foundation on Ethics and Education. He served as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Medical Ethics and founded the Journal of Practical Ethics. According to academic analytics company ScholarGPS, he ranks first globally in medical ethics and bioethics among all scholars.

His philosophical positions, particularly on genetic selection and human enhancement, have generated substantial academic debate. His principle of procreative beneficence, which argues that parents have moral reasons to select children with the best chance of the best life, has been influential in discussions of reproductive ethics and genetic technologies.
